Block Bins, Chicago's Leading Compost Service, Launches Yard Waste Offering

Updated: Jun 7, 2022

Chicagoans Can Responsibly, Easily, and Inexpensively Dispose of Yard Waste

CHICAGO, Illinois – Block Bins brings its network of nearly 600 shared compost deposit bins to bear in offering convenient, affordable, reliable yard waste pickup across Chicago. The service is being made available to anyone in Chicago, even if they are not a current Block Bins composting service subscriber. Yard waste pickups are charged at $10 per bag of material, and can be scheduled online at www.blockbins.com.

To participate in the service, residents place grass clippings, plant trimmings, leaves, and even tree branches, in a standard 32 gallon paper yard waste bag and visit www.blockbins.com. By entering their address on the Block Bins map, they can see active Block Bins near them and select any convenient bin to use for their yard waste pickup by clicking on its icon. Once a pickup is requested, the bag of yard waste can be placed next to that bin and Block Bins will deliver it to a composting facility.

“We hear complaints from people about how difficult it can be to responsibly dispose of yard waste each year,” said Block Bins founder and CEO Dane Christianson. “We realized that our existing network of compost bins could solve this problem, and keep yard waste out of landfills, while keeping to our values of making it convenient and inexpensive to be environmentally responsible.”

Block Bins’ innovative approach to urban composting allows neighbors to share collection bins and pay only for the volume of food scraps their household uses, making it the most affordable compost service in the region with subscriptions beginning at just $10 per month. Customers can elect to join an existing, active bin near their home, or if none is convenient to them they can request to start a new Block Bin for their block, which is placed into service once it reaches a sustainability threshold of either 15 gallons of volume per month, or three subscribers.
